The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) is the largest public health research institution in
Tanzania. It was established by the Parliamentary Act No. 23 of 1979 as a parastatal organization under
the Ministry of Health. The establishment of NIMR was in recognition by the government of the need to
generate scientific information required in the development of better methods and techniques of
enhancing disease management, prevention and control in the country.

Introduction:

The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), Mwanza Centre in collaboration with the Imperial
College, London, The Natural History Museum, London, and the Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, have
received funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), UK, to
implement a three year research project entitled "WISER: Water Infrastructure for Schistosomiasis
Endemic Regions". The project's major objective is to determine the effectiveness of water treatment
processess in removing or inactivating schistosome cercariae in water samples collected from
schistosomiasis endemic regions in Ethiopia and Tanzania. The project is currently looking for suitably
qualified, highly motivated young Tanzanians to fill the following vacant posts:

1.0 Postdoctoral researcher (1 position)

1.1 Duties and responsibilities

·         To assist senior investigators to plan and execute field and laboratory activities including
preparation of data collection tools, collection and analysis of samples and related data using
various methods

·        To provide overall supervision of project activities both in the field and in the laboratory and
provide logistic support during project implementation

·        To assist senior investigators to perform basic quality control of samples and data collected

·        To assist the team leader in keeping inventory of project equipment, field and laboratory
consumables

·        To write project progress reports from time to time as requested by senior investigators

·        Any other related duties as assigned by senior investigators

1.2 Required qualifications and experience

·        PhD degree in biology/biomedical sciences, environmental engineering, environmental sciences
or related field

·        A master's degree in the same field of study plus substantial research experience will also be
considered.

2.0 Laboratory Technician (1 position)

2.1 Duties and responsibilities

·        To collect, process, analyse and preserve water and other project samples and record findings

·        To assist in archiving of samples after analysis

·        Any other related duties assigned by senior investigators

2.2 Required qualifications and experience

·        University degree in medical laboratory sciences

·        At least one year of relevant research experience

·        Research experience and/or training in schistosomiasis or related field will be an added
advantage.

3.0 Data Manager (1 position)

3.1 Required qualifications:

·        University degree in mathematics, computer science, biostatistics or related field of study.

A master's degree in the same field will be an added advantage.

·        At least two years experience in a similar position in a reputable academic/research
institution

3.2 Duties and responsibilities

·        Assist the research team in preparation of data collection tools

·        Assist the research team in supervision of field data collection, data entry and quality control of

data collected

·        Create and manage project database, perform data cleaning and data analysis

·        To write project progress reports from time to time as requested by the project leader

·        Any other related duties as assigned by the team leader

Duration of employment contract and remuneration

·      Remuneration will be according to NIMR scheme of service.

·      The incumbent shall hold the position for one year renewable subject to annual performance review.
