Monitoring & Evaluation Program Assistant
The
Tanzania People & Wildlife Fund (TPW) is a Tanzanian nonprofit organization
dedicated to the conservation of wildlife and important natural habitats
through a community -based approach.
TPW
helps rural communities develop their skills and abilities to protect natural
resources in a manner that maximizes their benefits from these landscapes while
also preserving ecological integrity. Emphasizing the critical importance of
community-led initiatives, the organization provides information, training ,and
service level support to its rural constituencies to strengthen local
institutions and community-driven
actions
for natural resource management and wildlife conservation.
TPW
operates from the Noloholo Environmental Center on the Maasai Steppe in
northern Tanzania.
Sharing
a boundary with Tarangire National Park, this center acts as TPW’s regional
headquarters as well as an educational center where rural community members
improve their understanding of the environment and develop hands -on skills in
natural resource management.
From this center, TPW operates programs
in four major programmatic areas:
(1)
human-wildlife conflict prevention,
(2)
youth environmental education and adult capacity building &training,
(3)
natural resource conservation and rangeland management, and
(4)
environmentally-sustainable conservation enterprise and development.
Position Description:
TPW
is looking for a passionate, energetic , and experienced individual to work
closely the Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, Christy Ihlo, and TPW staff
to expand the organization’s capacity in Monitoring & Evaluation for its
community-based conservation programs in northern Tanzania.
The
successful candidate will have experience with data entry and management, and
an interest in learning about innovative methods to collect and manage data,
including mobile applications. Great organizational skills, ability to multitask,
and high level of attention to details are a must. The successful candidate
will also have impressive communication and interpersonal skills, and the
ability to work in a multi-cultural environment with diverse stakeholders. This
position will be stationed at the Noloholo
Environmental
Center, so he or she should be willing to work in remote areas for the majority
of the time.
Much
of the incumbent ’s time will be spent on daily data management (ensuring data
submitted is complete and error-free) and helping to build databases to manage
data.
The
incumbent can also expect to assist in report writing and potentially, data
analysis.
Opportunities
to participate in field data collection may be possible.
We
are looking for someone who is excited to help develop this new department and
is willing to tackle unfamiliar tasks without hesitation.
Key Responsibilities:
•Management
of data on a daily or weekly basis: Tasks include ensuring data is entered into
paper or computer logs in a timely manner, completing data retrieval from
Smartphones and uploading into the computer, and reviewing all incoming data
for completeness and errors.
•Development
of databases (or assisting with this process): We use both Microsoft Excel and Access,
depending on the data. The incumbent will play a crucial role in both
developing and maintaining these databases as well as working with our ODK
systems
.
•Report
writing (or providing data needed for reports to the Director of M&E): The
incumbent will be responsible for generating short, weekly reports such as
summarizing water and fuel use.
The
incumbent will also be responsible for providing programmatic
summary
data to the
Director
for the generation of monthly, quarterly, or annual reports as needed.
Qualifications:
The
successful candidate will have at least a Bachelor’s degree in natural resource
management,
community
development, or a closely related field. Experience with data management ,
particularly using Microsoft Excel, is required.
Experience
with Microsoft Access, GIS software (e.g., QGIS or ArcGIS),
report
writing, and mobile data collection applications (e.g., Open Data Kit
or
Cybertracker) is desirable.
Preference
will be given to candidates with prior experience in community
-based
conservation initiatives and related ventures in the social sciences or natural
resource fields.
•Bachelor’s
degree or equivalent work experience in one of the above fields
(candidates
with Master’s degree may be given preference);
•Familiarity
with Microsoft Excel;
•Interest
in applying innovative data collection methods;
•Interest
in learning GIS;
•Strong
organizational skills;
•High
level of attention to detail;
•Strong
interpersonal skills, including respect for other cultures;
•Willingness
to live in a remote setting;
•Excellent
spoken and written English skills; and
•Passionate
concern for big cats, local communities
,
and TPW’s mission.

Salary & Benefits:
Full-time
position based on experience and qualifications; salary commensurate with
experience
and TPW pay scale
.
Basic housing and food provided onsite.
