1. Background:

The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) is the largest public health research
institution in Tanzania. It was established by the Parliamentary Act 1\10. 23 of 1979 as a
parastatal organization under the Ministry of Health. The establishment of NIMR was in

recognition by the government of the need to generate scientific information required in
the development of better methods and techniques of enhancing disease management,
prevention and control in the country.

quality health research and deliver evidence-based information that is responsive to the
needs of human well being.

3. Introduction:

The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) Mwanza Centre is seeking to recruit . experienced, committed and motivated Tanzanians to fill the following vacant posts:

Position: Translators (4 posts) - Re-Advertised

Direct line supervisor: Qualitative coordinator.

Qualifications & experience for translators

1. S/he must be at least first degree holder (preferably with specialization in
    linguistics).
2. S/he must have at least 2 year experience in conducting translations {from English
    to Kiswahili or vice versa and from Sukuma to Kiswahili
3. Must be computer literate and particular proficient in Microsoft word processing program                              (with high speed   in typing readable documents i.e. at least 3000 characters / key stroke per hour).
4. Must have skills in proof reading and editing of technical reports.
5. Must be fluent in spoken and written English.

Job description for translators

1. Review, proof read and edit technical reports prepared by field research team and study coordinators.
2. Support researchers and study coordinators to synthesize and summarize technical reports
3. Translate study tools (from Kiswahili to English or Sukuma to Kiswahili/English)
4. Back translate study tools from English to Kiswahili language
5. Translate qualitative field materials / texts/ data from Kiswahili to English languages
6. Develop study specific lexicon / dictionary / glossary of technical and scientific terminology
   (list of definitions for English phrases and concepts)(English to Kiswahili dictionary)
7. Support researchers with proof reading and grammatical corrections of technical reports
8. Provide synonyms, and metonyms of terminologies for various technical documents.

Terms of employment

• The incumbent will be employed on temporarily terms of employment.

• The successful applicants will be assigned to support various research projects and activities implemented by NIMR Mwanza and the collaborative institutions /project. The selected candidate shall base at NIMR Mwanza premises. When needed s/he may travel to the field for related duties
• The selected candidate will undergo three months probation period.
• Remuneration will be on pro rata basis.
