General Manager

Job description

BlackIvy Tanzania is seeking a President & General Manager to lead its cold storage and third-party logistics (“3PL”) venture in East Africa. 

The President & General Manager will build and lead a team to develop, launch and grow the cold storage and 3PL business in East Africa. We are looking for an entrepreneur and experienced cold storage and 3PL executive with a track record of delivering logistics solutions in emerging markets serving multiple sectors.

The President & General Manager will have the responsibility to
1.       Lead the development of the cold storage and 3PL business, supervising the design and construction of the cold warehouses within budget and on schedule, recruiting and training a team, establishing safe and efficient operating procedures, and identifying and managing customers. In achieving these objectives, the President will:
a.       deploy and manage consultants and experts undertaking design, engineering, environmental assessment, construction, equipment and IT infrastructure selection, and marketing assessments for our facilities;
b.     recruit, train and supervise an exceptional in-house team to oversee:

       i.     Sales, Marketing and Customer Management;

       ii.     Finance and IT;

       iii.     Operations; and,

       iv.     Distribution and Security;

c.       establish, implement, monitor and modify systems and standard operating procedures to safely and efficiently meet business objectives and satisfy customer requirements.
d.     actively supervise material handling processes to ensure accurate, timely, and efficient receiving, storage and dispatch of products to satisfy customer needs.
e.     identify, attract and manage new customers.

2.     Develop strategies to maintain and expand competitive advantages.
3.       Identify and pursue future growth opportunities for the cold storage and 3PL business across a and East Africa, enhancing value-chains from farm to market in the emerging horticulture and aquaculture sector
4.     Identify strategic partners in the food industry seeking to enter the market who require an international standard of cold storage and 3PL services.
5.       Ensure the highest standards of ethics, diligence, accountability, and governance.


Knowledge of warehouse management systems, transportation management systems and enterprise resource planning systems is essential.

BlackIvy is seeking a President & General Manager with:
An entrepreneur’s acumen. BlackIvy seeks attractive investment opportunities in places that remain off the map for many traditional investors. The President will lead the enterprise to achieve its goal of becoming the dominant provider of cold storage and 3PL services in East Africa. 

Deep experience in cold chain logistics development and operations. Ideal candidates will have 5+ years of relevant experience in operational management of cold storage and 3PL businesses in emerging markets, ideally in Sub-Saharan Africa.   We are looking for applied skills in developing, managing and growing cold storage and 3PL businesses including exposure to the full business cycle, ranging from defining the target market and designing right-sized facilities, to determining service offerings, managing operations, marketing, building customer relations and identifying expansion opportunities.
A leader with management expertise. We are seeking an operational leader who can lead and grow the venture from inception to maturity, and who can build, train and manage an in-country team of employees. The President should have demonstrated experience managing cross-functional teams operating multiple sites, customers and service offerings for a wide range of products. 

A track record in building relationships. The President will regularly engage with local partners, community leaders and government officials, and must have the capacity to engage a diverse range of people, organizations and challenges effectively.
Demonstrable technical, quantitative, and analytical skills.  The ideal candidate would possess solid proficiency in reviewing and using financial models and budget tracking tools.
An ability to communicate effectively. The President would be able to clearly articulate and present information in an accessible manner to target customers, team, investors and financial partners – orally and in writing.
