Program Officer, M&E
Employer Name: Clinton Health Access Initiative
Application Deadline: 18-02-2017
Description
Overview:
Founded in 2002, by President William J. Clinton and Ira Magaziner, the Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (“CHAI”) is a global health organization committed to strengthening integrated health systems and expanding access to care and treatment in the developing world. CHAI’s solution-oriented approach focuses on improving market dynamics for medicines and diagnostics; lowering prices for treatment; accelerating access to lifesaving technologies; and helping governments build the capacity required for high-quality care and treatment programs. Since its inception, CHAI’s programs have helped more than 11.8 million people in more than 70 countries have access to CHAI-negotiated prices for HIV/AIDS medicines, saving the global health community billions of dollars.

Malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhea are the three leading causes of child mortality in Tanzania but can be readily treated with inexpensive medicines by properly trained providers if identified early. Many patients suffering from these conditions in rural areas seek treatment in Accredited Drug Dispensing Outlets (ADDOs) or informal drug shops due to challenges in accessing basic public health services, including cost and time to travel to public health facilities, long wait times, and stock outs of essential commodities.
In Tanzania, CHAI has been working closely with the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) to improve malaria case management (diagnosis and treatment), and in particular the availability of high-quality, affordable malaria diagnosis and treatment among ADDOs. CHAI recently conducted a pilot with the Tanzania NMCP to demonstrate that ADDOs can safely and feasibly administer RDTs among suspected cases. The results of this study have influenced a larger scale up plan supported by CHAI and the Global Fund.
While all ADDO dispensers are allowed to treat uncomplicated malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhea and receive some limited training when they first become dispensers, training on diagnosis is weak and does not include malaria rapid diagnostic tests (mRDTs). CHAI is now launching a program in four regions in Tanzania to dramatically increase patient access to high quality care for malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhea by improving drug shop capacity to diagnose, treat, and track these conditions. The information from strengthened diagnosis and reporting will provide the health system with critical information to further improve health outcomes. This program will affect an estimated 256,000 people across these regions, one-fifth under the age of 5, with symptoms of fever or diarrhea.
