Acacia Mining seeks to employ a Rigger First Line Leader based at North Mara Mine in Tanzania. This role reports to the Section Leader HME and the role holder will be accountable to ensure that team members follow the procedures in the day to day Rigging work and maintain Rigging activities in a safe and cost effective manner.

This is a permanent/ fixed term contract role, with the work roster being six weeks on and three weeks off.

Core Accountabilities

• Ensure safe work practices by attending compulsory safety courses and meetings, use of required PPE, incident/accident reporting, hazard identification and ensuring total adherence to all Safety, Occupational Health and Environmental Policies of Acacia, as well as other policies, procedures and guidelines.
• Conduct pre-start checks and job hazards analysis.
• Ensure adequate controls are in place for the safe use and movement of lifting equipment on the mine.
• Monitor, plan and maintain all crane wire ropes, rigging and related equipment.
• Ensure adequate maintenance, repair and inspection of all lifting gear and ropes in accordance with statutory requirements.
• Ensure that relevant SOP’s are developed and adhered to for all work activities involving continuous lifting and / or lowering.
• Ensure that legal and related registers for all crane, hoist, scaffolds, ladders, slings, snatch-blocks, lever hoists, ropes man-cages and all related lifting gear is kept up-to-date.
• Inspect and certify all lifting gear in accordance with provisions of OSHA and MHSA.
• Clean, measure and dress steel wire ropes and chains used on mobile, electrical overhead travelling or manual lifting equipment.
• Fabricate, set up, and repair rigging, supporting structures, hoists, and pulling gear, using hand and power tools.
• Select gear such as cables, pulleys, and winches according to load weights and sizes, facilities, and work schedules.
• Signal or verbally direct workers engaged in hoisting and moving loads, in order to ensure safety of workers and materials.
• Tilt, dip, and turn suspended loads to maneuver over, under, and/or around obstacles, using multi-point suspension techniques.
• Complete and submit daily reports /log sheets on time.
• Ensure that objectives are met by team members.
• Conduct performance reviews for team members and ensure that they have development plans with milestones
• Train and develop team members in rigging skills in preparation for Trade Tests.

Role Requirements

Qualification Requirements:

• Must have a Rigger/ Ropesman Trade Certificate from a recognized institution
• Driver’s license and mine driving permit

Experience Requirements:

• Minimum of 5 years’ post-apprenticeship experience as a Rigger or Ropesman in the mining industry.
• 2-3 years’ experience in a supervisory role.
• Experience in managing Rigging consumables and costs.

Skills / Knowledge Requirements:

• The ability to coach, mentor and train Rigging crew
• Skilled in operating various industrial machines such as Forklift, Overhead Cranes, self-loading vehicle cranes, trucks (HGV), mobile cranes etc.
• Demonstrated knowledge and skill competencies in safe lifting techniques, lifting gear selection, determination of weights and mass and crane movement directing.
• Demonstrated ability to safely operate equipment.
• Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) in English.
• Must have the ability to operate with minimum supervision.
• High professional conduct at all times and the ability to deal with a diverse client base.
