1. BACKGROUND

The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) is the largest public health research institution in Tanzania. It was established by an Act of parliament N 0.23 of 1979 as a parastatal organization under the Ministry of Health. The establishment of NIMR was in recognition by the government of the need to generate scientific information required in the development of better methods and techniques of enhancing disease management, prevention and control in the country.

To conduct, coordinate, regulate and promote scientifically and ethically sound, high quality health research and deliver evidence-based information that is responsive to the needs of human wellbeing.

3. THE CICADA STUDY

NIMR Mwanza Centre will be implementing a longitudinal study entitled Chronic Infections, Co- morbidities, And Diabetes in Africa (CICADA) which is aimed at investigating risk factors for chronic diseases including diabetes among HIV-infected patients in Tanzania. The Institute has now vacant position to work on the CICADA study and is inviting applications from motivated and suitably qualified candidates to fill the following position:

Research Medical Officer- (1 Post)
Duty station: NIMR Mwanza Centre
Reporting to: Centre Director 

Duties (Responsibilities):

·        Assisting the study coordinator to prepare study documents including source documents and
standard operating procedures

·        Providing study information to potential participants

·        Carrying out clinical examinations and completing source documents according to standard
operating procedures

·        Providing clinical management for patients in case of unexpected adverse events and

referring those who cannot be managed at the research clinic

·        Checking for completeness of source documents at the clinic before data entry

·        Contribute to resolve data queries arising from data processing

·        Contributing to the preparation of various study reports

·        Performing any other study-related activities as may be requested by her/his supervisor

The ideal candidate should be:

• A holder of medical degree from a recognized university who has:

·        completed internship and has been registered with medical council of Tanganyika as
a medical practitioner

·        work experience of up to 1 year after internship and is interested to pursue a career
in clinical research, epidemiology or public health

·        Clinicians with non-degree qualifications (i.e. diploma or advanced diploma In clinical medicine) with experience in clinical research are also invited to apply

Desirable conditions:

·        Excellent written and oral communication skills in English

·        Commitment to working as part of a multidisciplinary research team

·        Computer literacy

·        Honest and hard working

Duration of employment contract: 1 year with probation period of 3 months

Remuneration: Remuneration shall be strictly according to NIMR scheme of service
